ACSMC’s Competitors Guide – Sprinting & Hillclimb
What is Sprinting & Hillclimbing?
The Association runs both a Sprint and Hillclimb Championship. Each calendar consists of around 16 events, with the best 10 scores to count.
The sprint venues include race circuits at Goodwood and Castle Combe, plus a new street circuit at Sandown on the Isle of Wight, as well as venues used just 2 or 3 times a year.
One of the most popular venues is Dalton Barracks at Abingdon, which we visit in April and June. The June event is a part of a celebration of motorsport, with 2 sprint courses on the Saturday followed by a stage rally on the Sunday. Many competitors stay on to marshal on the Sunday, earning championship bonus points. At least one event in the Sprint championship – Gurston Down – is also a round in the Hillclimb equivalent.
The Hillclimb championship follows similar ideas – at least 2 visits to Gurston Down, as well as many events at Wiscombe and Werrington Parks. The sprint event included is normally at Castle Combe.
While the Motorsport UK Yearbook (commonly known as the Blue Book) provides the category definitions, the championship divides these into classes, to sub-divide by engine capacity/ two or four-wheel drive and type of engine. The intention is to provide a class structure that allows cars of different makes and configurations to compete on as equal terms as possible.
This structure is shared with other local associations, AEMC and ASEMC. Many of the event organisers have also adopted these class structures – this means that competitors will enter in the same class at different events and provides much needed stability.
Why enter a championship? As Championship Coordinator, I receive details of events – regulations etc. – as soon as they become available. These I then send to competitors. I also update contenders on any relevant changes to events. We also act as a communications conduit to and from Motorsport UK, particularly relevant and important when changes are being considered. The entry fee for each championship is just £5.
Championship details are normally published in January/February each year, with the first event in late March/early April.
